Got a rolling start in a new direction You’re the boss Moving to you’re own beat Then anxious cells divide And tensions grow in size Before your eyes Started with the plan to make the world a better place You got something and rode it to nothing You’ve got the future in the palm of your hand And you realize that things are out of your hands There’s a vision in the sky reaching out it’s hand A cold blooded reptile reaching again Got the poison arts at your discretion You’re the boss You’re moving to your own beat So people come and go And in the rooms below They hope for some peace Started with the plan to take the power from the source You got something and rode it to nothing You’ve got the future in the palm of your hand And you realize just what they can’t understand You’ve been living on the line of danger out on the ranch You come rough, running high into battle again If there’s something on your mind You can say it or spray it (I can’t escape the magnetic pull, that’s got a hold on me) You’ve got the future in the palm of your hand

I would be believe in the power of thought Having the power to put meaning to the words You are in doubt of the power that you bring You are in doubt of your power over me Now out replace the mood And keep a line on what’s true to you (What’s true to you) You’re on the loose I would believe in the power of thought Having the power to put image into word I am in doubt of the power that it takes Raising the stakes of the power to relate Now out replace the mood And keep a line on what’s true to you (What’s true to you) You’re on the loose The word reflects the truth No matter what the brain could do (What’s true to you) I’m on the loose Now I know what is true!

Mighty Fine 03:00
Every sleep a small death Empty castles fill my head The burned-out image in my mind I caught my breath in waking time If you think everyone will forget you You made a permanent place in my mind You put me together just like a puzzle But some pieces just don’t fit right Waking while the moon is high Casting shadows in blue light My blood sucked by mosquitoes I’ve gotta feed my people If you think everyone will forget you You made a permanent place in my mind Forgetting would heal me like in the stories But this fever suits me mighty fine Vision through the wrong clouds I should change what I write about That burned out image stuck in my mind Cutting the chords to the life line If you think everyone will forget you You made a permanent place in my mind You put me together just like a puzzle But some pieces just don’t fit right If you think everyone will forget you You made a permanent place in my mind Forgetting would heal me like in the stories But this fever suits me mighty fine One more time!

I was beholden to the light Crawling in simple mode Trying to fit in your life time Out of the natural flow Stopping and going all the time I will be true to my desires Stuck in the afterglow Wanted to know What is wrong and what’s right It’s hurts but you’ve got to know Spiraling through the decline of our minds Then a shadow caught my eye Hide between the dark and the light I will be true to my desires Stuck in the afterglow Hidden by visual snow Or blank lines I miss how your eyes would glow Hunt in the dark on the sly To get by Then a shadow caught your eye I want to be invisible to you Existing somewhere out of view So if you see my shadow in the room It’s just the phase I’m passing through

about

Just a year after the release of his acclaimed LP Tyrannical Vibes, the prolific composer and Brooklyn-based songwriter Michael Kolb is back with another project under his last name, Power of Thought. Where Tyrannical Vibes is a heavily orchestrated labor of love, Power of Thought is an exercise in spontaneity, in working closely with friends to prove that clever songwriting and groovy arrangements make for an achievement in creative power. While Kolb projects are not known for subtlety, Power of Thought has a particularly exciting maximalism, as the live recording process between Kolb and his bandmates yields a fanciful, free-flowing exchange between keys, clarinet, vocals, percussion, and more across six tracks.

Recorded reel-to-reel with a live band in the home of Paco Cathcart (The Cradle), Power of Thought balances craft and whimsy, with Kolb channeling Milton Nascimento and Steely Dan throughout. When writing Power of Thought, Kolb struggled under the weight of doubt, questioning his own capabilities to wield power as the systems of state oppression flexed their muscles around him. On tracks like “You’ve Got The Future (In The Palm Of Your Hand)” and “Dark and Light,” Kolb sings his power into existence. Instrumental tracks like “The Key” and “On the Regular,” featuring the jazz clarinet stylings of Hillai Govreen, evade immediate meaning, but they offer opportunities to forge meaning out of the interstitial experiences of everyday life, where we negotiate our autonomy with every breath, every step.

For years, Kolb was Michael’s solo project, one where he tweaked with diverse processes and strictures to see what he could produce. But, beginning with Tyrannical Vibes, Kolb has grown into a band where Michael thrives in collaboration with like-minded oddballs. While Power of Thought celebrates the little guy’s power to resist abjection, the project is less a celebration of the individual and more of the community, of what’s possible when motivated makers get together in search of something transcendent. Power of Thought isn’t just about the thoughts of one guy; it’s the result of trust, curiosity, and compassion between a group of collaborators who’ve made a home under the Kolb umbrella.
